The Beginning of Holy Week (Semana Santa): Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday is the Sunday that celebrates when Jesus rode into Jerusalem. As he entered the city, he was welcomed by people of all ages carrying palm leaves and waving them in the air. One short week later, he would be crucified by these same people. Below is a photo of a woman getting ready palms for Sunday. On Palm Sunday, images of Jesus and "The Holy Virgin of Sorrow" are carried through the streets of the city to remind people of Jesus' entrance and the dark hours to come. The followers who carry these images and the those that follow in the processional wear purple robes with white waistbands to remind us of Jesus as King and God.Semana Santa, or Holy Week, is a very important week both in the United States, but possibly moreso in Guatemala. Businesses close down for the week (it appears that PGN is still up and running though) and the entire town of Antigua (a major city in Guatemala) participates in reenacting the Passion, Crucification, and Resurrection of Jesus. This photo below shows Guatemalans dressed as Roman Guards. Amazing huh?As the week goes on, and as we wait for news from PGN, I'll tell you more about what they do in Guatemala.

These photos were taken from Antigua Photo of the Day as it follows this website's copyright regulations.
